Biodegradable packaging may be the only option
come 2010. European legislation may introduce a ban on the disposal
of bio waste to landfill sites which will not only have an effect
on the packaging industry, but also households across Europe.
The environment is something that we all take for granted and we should
all show it a little more consideration. From gas fumes to dumping
waste, we are rapidly killing our world. There is over 2.5tonnes of
plastic from households alone dumped into landfill every year. Packaging
can take between 80 and 100 years to breakdown. This is why extensive
action is required and this is why extensive action is now being taken.
Many leading supermarkets have started to
invest in biodegradable packaging, but we will all have to in the
not too distant future. There are currently many options available
for packers including Natureflex, Addiflex and Biophane.
NatureFlex films are truly unique, high performance
cellulose-based films that are biodegradable and compostable to
international norms. Natureflex is made from renewable wood pulp
and is used for various types of packaging including fresh produce,
cheese, dried foods etc and has variant of heat and non-heat seal
able.
Addiflex is the most cost effective current way to
produce degradable packaging. Addiflex packaging will fully degrade
to carbon dioxide, water and a small amount of organic residue after
approximately 4 years in the domestic watse stream which compares
to conventional plastics that can take over 100 years.
Biophan film is manufactured from polylacticacid
(PLA) has excellent quality features such as exceptional transparency
and high surface gloss. The film is made of annually renewable primary
product starch and completely biodegradable into carbon dioxide
and water.
We at Active Packaging
take all environmental issues seriously and encourage everyone to
become more environmentally friendly.
